Practicing the Yamas

Another way to support a community is by taking a contemporary perspective of the yogic teachings called the yamas: the five principles that support building character, which can lead to healthier engagement with others. The word “yama” often gets translated as “constraints.” I believe a more welcoming definition is when it gets translated as a “bridle,” the headgear used to steer a horse. We can think of the yamas as suggestions for living that can steer us in a life-affirming direction. And just like the reigns on a horse, most of the time you don’t need to hold on too tightly; a loose grip can produce a more desirable result as you work with the intelligence of the horse or, in this case, life.

The yamas are guidelines for how we can engage with life in a positive way. By practicing the yamas, you are more likely to act in accordance with your highest self. By doing so, you are more likely to engage with your community from a more grounded, clear, and loving place—which can lead to a more supportive and productive community. Like with so many yogic teachings, while these five principles are described separately, they dovetail, inform, and work with one another to support us as we navigate our path.

For the next five days, focus each day on one of the yamas, and journal about your experience. How did focusing on this yama impact your own sense of fulfillment and well-being? How did it impact your relationships? How did you feel?
